While a Lieutenant Colonel in the US Army, Mark was nominated and selected to be the Commander of the Data Systems Unit (Chief Information Officer civilian equivalent) for the Clinton White House from 1995 to 1999. His mission was to provide safe and secure, Information Technology and Communication to the President, Vice President, White House Staff, and U.S. Secret Service. After spending around five years at The White House interacting with the President and his staff on a daily basis, he has a rare insight that few have seen about how the President and The White House operated behind closed doors.
Since retiring from the Army, Mark has held multiple senior leadership positions in the civilian sector in Information Technology, Information/Cyber Security, and Governance/Compliance fields as a CIO/CTO/CSO & CISO for several global companies. Brigadier General Gelhardt is still giving back to his country and his community as the Commanding General of the all-volunteer Georgia State Defense Force (GSDF), a Georgia National Guard Auxiliary.
This presentation will talk about the inner workings of The White House, the Presidency, and the hard work of the military members that support the Commander in Chief. The primary reason I wrote my book "My Time at the Clinton White House", was to tell these stories so my family and my friends can now learn what their dad, husband, and friend were doing for four and a half years while at The White House.
Throughout my whole time at The White House, I learned a lot of classified government secrets. I had to segment the classified from the unclassified information: what I could tell my wife and family and what I could not tell them about my job. I worked with a lot of classified information, I saw a lot of Presidential secrets, I heard a lot of Clinton Family issues and it was hard to know all this information and not say anything. But I was a professional military officer with a mission to do and I had signed an oath! Now 20-plus years later, much of what was classified is no longer classified and or is already known by the public. I will not divulge anything that is still classified, after all I did take an oath. Any still classified stories will have to wait for a later time or may never be told.
What I will provide to you are some great stories of the inner workings of The White House, some information about how things run, and some very, very funny stories of things that happened to me and my friends working at The White House and with the President. I hope everyone enjoys the stories that make me smile when remembering them. My book shows the inner workings of The White House, the Presidency, and the hard work of the military members that support the Commander in Chief.
